Environmental Liaison Information: What is happening at every school in SFUSD:

Nik's Letter to the EL's at every school:

Dear Liaisons-

I was tremendously energized by your enthusiasm at the trainings and by the many astute questions and observations I have received via email since then. I am extremely confident that as a group, we will be able to translate the success of the Shared Savings pilot program into District-wide results. I encourage you to engage your colleagues and students in this effort and to build a culture of conservation at your sites that will reduce your impact on the environment and generate much-needed funds for your school. I stand ready and willing to assist you in any way I can. Do not hesitate to email or call me with your questions and to text me photos of your heating system so I can provide insights from afar (see signature below). MOST IMPORTANTLY, DON’T FORGET TO SHARE YOUR BEST PRACTICES AND SUCCESS STORIES SO THAT I CAN FEATURE THEM IN FUTURE MONTHLY EMAILS.

MAKE-UP TRAINING
If you missed one of the initial trainings, you’ll be getting an email from me to arrange a make-up session. Remember, the training is required in order to get your stipend so that all Environmental Liaisons have a common base of understanding.

NEXT STEPS
For the remainder of the year, we will focus on reducing District utility usage by 10%. In order to launch this program quickly before the heating season is over, I recommend the following next steps:

1.Ask your principal for 10 minutes to present Shared Savings at a staff meeting in early-mid February. Also, ask for five minutes at every subsequent meeting for program updates.
2.Read through all attached materials. Beg, borrow, and steal any and all of them as you see fit.
3.Conduct a walk-through of your facility using the attached building audit. Consider having classes take this on as an educational project.
4.Present your audit findings, program elements, and conservation tips to your colleagues at the staff meeting. REMEMBER TO FOCUS ONLY ON GAS USE DURING THE FIRST MONTH.
5.Ask staff members to share information about wasted energy and uncomfortable rooms with you after the meeting.
6.Monitor implementation of your recommendations every couple of weeks.
7.Sit patiently while you wait for utility data to come in (two months after the fact – sadly – for now).

POWERPOINT
As promised, I have reworked the PowerPoint so you have a more visually stunning presentation to give to your colleagues. I suggest you review it in its entirety since I have added some new information. Pick and choose the slides you think are appropriate for your staff. To hide a slide from a presentation without deleting it from the document, click the “Hide Slide” button on the menu bar while in multi-slide view.

Because the PowerPoint is so large, I will send it in a subsequent email. In case your email system blocks files of that size, the PowerPoint will also be available until Tuesday, February 7th, 5pm at: https://rcpt.yousendit.com/1359924878/e91ace55501667a4dba34c5cb215758d <https://rcpt.yousendit.com/1359924878/e91ace55501667a4dba34c5cb215758d?cid=tx-02002207350200000000&s=19104>

RESOURCES
I have attached the following resources to this email:

  • latest available utility report for each school (separated by ES, MS, and HS)
  • graphic of relative energy use for each site (keep in mind that your efforts are judged against your own baseline, not other schools)
  • resources mentioned in the PowerPoint
  • your school’s diversion rate and commute profile (for reference only – we’re not working on diversion until fall and transportation in 2013)
  • a grant calendar with deadlines for various environmentally focused school grants
Please let me know if you need any help interpreting the information.

I did not include a matrix of what green initiatives are underway at each of your sites because I found my matrix to be hopelessly out-of-date. Ask me for site-specific information.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS
I have received general buy-in from the leadership of after-school programs to support Shared Savings, but needless to say it will be up to you to educate individual employees at your school site. I encourage you to reach out to your local organizations to participate in this effort and to make a personal connection with someone that cares about the environment.

NEXT MEETINGS
We will not meet again until the fall, when we launch our Waste Reduction effort. Of course, I will be available to help you in whatever way you need in the meantime. J

High Hopes- Few Opportunities

external image StrengtheningScience.jpgHigh Hopes – Few Opportunities: The Status of Elementary Science Education in California reveals that intense pressure to meet accountability goals in mathematics and English has limited time for science, and teachers and schools do not have the infrastructure support needed to consistently provide students with quality science learning opportunities. Among the findings:
  • 40 percent of elementary teachers say they spend 60 minutes or less teaching science each week.
  • One-third of elementary teachers say they feel prepared to teach science.
  • 85 percent of teachers say they have not received any professional development in science during the last three years.
  • Nine in ten principals say science education is very important and should start early.
  • Less than half of principals (44%) believe it is likely that a student would receive high-quality science instruction in his or her school.
The report includes recommendations to assist educators and policymakers in efforts to strengthen science education in California. The recommendations call for an immediate review and revision of the state’s educational accountability systems, the restoration of a full and balanced curriculum, including science, for every student, and the establishment of adequate resource allocation and support systems needed to ensure high quality science learning experiences. The recommendations also encourage local school districts to make quality science education a priority.
